CAVES TO CAYES - Belize
Besides tropical coastline, we will show you pristine rainforest and ancient Maya ruins. This multi sport trip has you ocean and river kayaking, hiking, snorkeling and more.According to most recent surveys about 60 % of Belize is forested and around 37 % of Belize’s land is protected Parkland. Swampy wetlands, scrubland and savanna form an extensive part of this country, while only about 20 % of this nation’s ground is subject to human use. The north of Belize presents itself mostly flat, the south holds the low range of the Maya Mountains. Belize’s biodiversity is plentiful both on land and in the water with some 450 islets and cayes forming the Belize Barrier Reef, the world’s second longest after the Great Barrier Reef.
In September 1981 British Honduras became officially Belize. This tiny nation offers superb natural wonders, an incredibly interesting and rich cultural history, while offering some of the most unbelievable beaches, breathtaking cayes, lush jungles and remarkable ruins! It is estimated that over 1400 ruins have not been localized yet.
Cayes
Belize is laced with dozens of small islands or "cayes". Some of the cayes located on the southern half of the reef are completely uninhabited and offer plenty to visitors, including snorkeling, fishing and diving. Bird watchers see many different types of seabirds such as brown pelicans, yellow-crowned night herons and the magnificent frigate bird, to name just a few.Placencia
Our trips include a stay in Placencia, one of the oldest inhabited villages in Belize. Along its three mile long beachfront are houses and lodges, all nestled under palm trees. The waters are calm and clear, with dolphins often seen feeding and playing close to shore.Known for its sleepy, tranquil and informal way of life, this is a place where one can fit in by doing absolutely nothing! For the more active, however, Placencia is an excellent take off point for the interior nature parks, Mayan ruins and lesser-known southern caves. Placencia also has a lively night-life to enjoy.
