Early Season at Orca Camp

We have been incredibly fortunate this year to have a strong start to the season. After 40 years of kayaking with whales on the Johnstone Strait we know the earliest part of the season can be a bit unpredictable. Weather plays a part in that, for sure, but so do the animals. We are now two weeks in…and so far so good! We’ve had some incredible wildlife sightings, we’ve welcomed guests from across Canada and as far away as Australia …

Count Down to Orca Camp

We’ve been busy counting down the days until our 40th season of kayaking with whales on BC’s Johnstone Strait.
3, 2, 1…we’re off! We’ve loaded up our gear, strapped everything we need for a season of paddling onto a barge and have begun the process of building out our camp.
Everything we have at Orca Camp gets shipped in from the mainland at the beginning of each season

  • Spending Time in Nature Essential to Childhood Development

We were eating our Wheaties yesterday, watching the morning new show, CBS This Morning, when they aired a story about a school outside of Atlanta, Georgia where the classrooms are literally outdoors. The reason the students spend their school days outdoors? Studies have shown that spending time out in nature is essential to childhood development. The Chatahoochee Charter School may only be a couple of years old, but standardized testing of their students shows reading scores of third graders are …

Orca Camp – Where Kids can Still be Kids

Do you remember those days — they may be long ago — those days when you’d be sent outside to play and told not to come back until your mom called you? Or, do you remember the first time you ate marshmallows off a stick, fresh out of the campfire, their charred exterior giving way to an ooey-gooey soft centre? Or do you recall heading off to explore a deserted beach or forest trail, searching for ancient treasure? Did you …

Whale Wild – a Love Letter

(You may have seen this before over on our Facebook page, but we thought it worth sharing again in this space, for those who don’t follow our social sites)
We are so fortunate that budding documentary film-maker and poet, Robyn Thomas, joins us at Orca Camp in summer. As passionate about Orcas as they come, Robyn has guided with us for the last three years in between studying and film-making. We always knew she loved this place we play in…we had …
